Perhaps one of the most widely recognised appellations in the wine world, Châteauneuf-du-Pape was one of the first wines I added to my list. The arid land and strictly regulated appellation produces powerful reds that I find exciting to drink - beautifully complex.
Tasting Notes
From 100% old vine Grenache, the nose on this wine is captivating with dark red fruits and smoky oak. An explosion of fruit on the palate, leading towards a mid-palate packed with sweet, jammy blackberries. This wine is ripe, yet surprisingly fresh and held together by the finesse of the tannins, Provençal herbs and black pepper. It has a full profile with lush textures and a round lingering finish.
Did you know?
-The land here must be arid enough to grow thyme and lavender.
-The region is famous for its ‘galets’ (also known as pudding stones) which heat up in the sun and then retain heat, keeping the vines warm at night.
-It has been forbidden to fly flying saucers over these vineyards since 1954.
